Our plan was a loop to Chocorua (Weetamoo / Hammond / Liberty up and Piper down). However, about 0.1 miles below the last left turn on Weetamoo before the Hammond junction, my pup stuck her nose in a ground-based hornet’s nest. She got at least three stings and jaggedly broke a toenail in her scrabble to evade the pissed off critters. The hornet’s nest (or yellow jackets, or something with a stinger) is fairly obvious and right on the trail (you have to step over it). Sadly my pup ignored my attempts to pull her away from it.
Sigh. She’s ok, without much swelling, but it was definitely not fun.
I wasn’t sure how she would do overall so I bailed us down Hammond and then had a not fun roadwalk on route 16.
Weetamoo is an awesome trail and I honestly didn’t see anything flying around the nest prior to the incident. Keep your eyes peeled if you head that way.
