Unenamored with the thought of after work type trails near my house and unencumbered by a schedule, I happily drove 51 minutes to Tamworth (maybe 55 after the school buses made their stops) to start my path to become a Hikin' Heron (see the Tamworth Conservation Commission website for more info). The turbos kicked in at the welcoming mailbox (no maps inside) through the bottom half of Betty Steele Loop as I made my way up Peg King Spur to the Great Hill Fire Tower (of course I am keeping track) but cooled the jets on the way down so I wouldn't take an unfortunate ankle twister by way of leaf covered rock.
Views from the Fire Tower are great. Easy Walker is as advertised.
All in all, a nice little trail system that is worth adding in to a day when you are in the area and have time after your planned hike. Or just go for the sake of going and appreciate what the town of Tamworth has to offer.
If you approach the loop part of Betty Steele Loop while outbound, there is signage as well as the aforementioned yellow tape indicating the re-route. |
