Haystack Road and Gale River Road were both open, but could close soon, USFS usually closes their gates around mid-november ... plenty of parking on a weekend in "tweener season" between columbus day and Winter |

| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Blue, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Leaves - Significant/Slippery |

Little River (third) crossing was easy ... former first and second crossings on North Twin Trail are no longer an issue as North Twin Trail has been re-routed to avoid them |

| Comments: |
North Twin Trail was mostly covered with dry leaves below 3500' which covered roots and rocks ... above 3500' patches of thin icy rivulets were avoidable by rock hopping ... a few icy patches between the Twins, not enough for microspikes ... upper half of Twinway hiking down from South Twin was dry, lower half of Twinway hiking down from South Twin had icy slabs which warranted tricky side-stepping - microspikes would not help much here until a decent snowfall covers up this section of trail, but hikers should be carrying microspikes now anyway ... not enough ice on Gale River Trail or Frost Trail to need microspikes if you're only going for Galehead ... a hiker who hiked over from Garfield said he did not need microspikes for Garfield Ridge Trail ...
spotted my bike at Gale River Trailhead, drove around to Zealand Trailhead, intending to ride back to my truck after hiking ... a kind hiker from Maine offered to drive me back to my truck, avoiding riding along route 3 and up Haystack Road as it grew dark - Grateful !
