Trails: Starr King Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, November 7, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The trailhead parking lot is fine, however, the access road up to the lot is in horrendous condition. The road has a gully and many crater-like holes in the surface. My RAV4 bottomed out twice on the way in. I scouted the road after the hiking to scope out the safest route. At slow speed I managed to leave without incident by a winding course avoiding the worst of the mess. I should have parked in the winter lot on the southside of US 2.

Comments
Comments: I saw only one other hiker not too far in from the trailhead. The man from Atkinson NH started his hike early.
All surfaces were damp but I did not find it slippery as the footing is good. There were a lot of leaves down very low. The leaves were more chewed up in the upper part of the hardwood forest.
There were some mud spots. The mud was mainly a putty-like consistency. Easy to walk through without sinking.
There was a lot of dark brown fern foliage covering the ground on the ridge. At a lower elevation, the evergreen forest floor was carpeted in bright green moss.
Saw a couple of grouse and one gray jay.
No views today. Usually, there a good views from Starr King and a blowdown area off the Kilkenny Ridge Trail just beyond the summit of Waumbek.
There is a trickle of water at the spring (signed).
I wore my hunter orange jacket today. Heard no firearms.
