| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Only six cars when I got there in the AM at Ferncroft, two or three dozen when I returned. Not quite full though. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Snow/Ice - Small Patches |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
All crossings were pretty much dry except for the one down low on Dicey’s Mill, but even that was low enough that you didn’t really have to use the log to walk across. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Rhere were a few fresh blowdowns. Most of the rest were easy walk overs or unders. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
I would not take my dog up Blueberry Ledge. Some dogs might do okay on it, but definitely not mine. Dicey’s Mill looked pretty dog friendly though. |

It was really windy today and I assume last night too, so there were a few fresh blowdowns. I saw two trees blow over in the woods (off trail) on my way up Blueberry Ledge. Moved a couple of small ones off the trail too.
Wow! Blueberry Ledge is no joke! It was a blast though. I definitely recommend bringing traction if the temps stay low - I brought my microspikes but they went for a ride. Any more snow/ice though & I would’ve put them on.
Views from the ledges & Whiteface were awesome! The Rollins Trail was a welcome reprieve from the wind. Heading up Dicey’s Mill towards Passaconaway there are a few stretches with ice covering the slab granite. You can get over or around it, but you have to watch your footing. Passaconaway is a wooded summit so no views from the top, but there were some pretty good views coming down Walden to get back to East Loop & Dicey’s Mill.
Down lower on Dicey’s Mill there are a ton of leaves down (sections where they were about shin-high for a while) so it was kind of slow going to prevent a twisted ankle or knee.
All in all it was a cold, but awesome day! |
