Parked at Garfield & road walked to Gale River Trail. Flat & fast for most of trail. Minor snow, frozen leaves & mud. Ice starts 1/3rd mile before hut on Garfield Ridge, plenty of rocks or ways around the worst areas. Headed up to South 1st, the most snow was here, not bad but icy areas here as well. Creative ways to avoid the real bad spots. Solo on top windy & cool but views for miles. Lunch at hut in the warm sun, solos here as well as Galehead. 1 minor icy spot on Frost as well. Was warned of bad ice over to Garfield. Worst was before about 1/3rd a mile East Peak herd path, at the crazy angled boulder/slab area. Very slow through here. Icy spots on all PUDS but manageable. Climb up to Campsite spur had ice & running water but easy to avoid. Quick to top with beautiful skies. Minor ice heading down, made it out just before dark. I forgot my spikes & managed, but spikes will be in the bag from now on. |
