If you're a hiker, Great Gully is definitely out for the season. I went up expecting to encounter ice and still found it more adventurous than planned. The waterfall is not frozen enough to climb with ice tools, but is too icy to climb without them. I bushwhacked up to some easier and more solid ice (climbable with ice axe & standard crampons) that looked like it would lead to an obvious bypass... it did not, and the bushwhack to get around the waterfall and back to the trail was strenuous and extremely time-consuming. The rest of the trails were pretty much as expected... snow & ice coated rocks, the boulders on the King Ravine Trail were treacherous. I put on my spikes when the Great Gully Trail got steep, switched to crampons for the ice and then back to spikes once I topped out and kept them on until maybe 1/3 of the way down Valley Way. Spikes were perfect for the minimal snow & ice on the rocks up to the summit of Adams & down Gulfside to the hut. I 100% do not recommend Great Gully Trail right now. |
