Comments
Comments: There are ice flows at various places on the trails. In between these flow spots are stretches of trail with no ice. Some form of traction is recommended for safe passage. The worst of the ice flows were in the upper stretches of the Crawford Path above the junction with the Mizpah Cut-Off before reaching the alpine zone and the Crawford Path in the col between Mt Pierce and Mt Eisenhower. Some of the ledges on the Webster Cliff Trail between Mt Pierce and Mizpah Hut were dry yet there was a lot of ice on this trail. The treeless ledges in the alpine zone on the Crawford Path and all of the Eisenhower Loop did not need traction as the small amount of ice is easily avoided. There is a short drift zone on the east side of Mt Eisenhower where the snow depth was a few inches that was easy to walk through. No hornets in the Mt Eisenhower summit cairn.
Excellent visibility with views stretching from Maine to Vermont. The view up the southern Presidential Range to Mt Washington is particularly stunning.
Gibbs Falls was beautiful with the snow and ice around the waterfall. A chunk of ice broke off while I was viewing the fall.
No wind today with cool temperatures (not much melting).
Met many hikers with most from NH (Randolph, Lancaster, Belmont, Merrimack, Hamstead).
Gray Jays, spruce grouse, and squirrels out today.
Lots of military jets in the afternoon.
