Spent the night at Zealand Hut, which was full so it was nice and warm. I had borrowed my mom's heated vest to keep me warm at night, but I didn't even need it! Started on trail at 7:00am. The wind was blustery and clouds were moving fast up until 9:30am, at which time it mellowed out and the day turned bluebird. Zealand trail and Twinway had a lot of ice. I brought both my rock spikes and my good spikes. One scramble section on Twinway between Zeacliff and Zealand Mtn had ice that was so hard my rock spikes couldn't grip, so I switched to good spikes for that section. Carrying two pairs of spikes was a lot of weight for that one small section, but I don't think I would have been able to climb it without the Hillsounds. The rest of the time the rock spikes were sufficient. Any snow on trail is hard packed, and all river crossings are low and easily rock-hopped. It took me 9hrs 20 minutes start to finish. One of the benefits of hiking the Bonds and Owl's Head a bunch of times is that I know longer am fooled by the false finish-lines up ahead on LW trail. Now I know the trail keeps on going forever. |
