This hike was undertaken to scout a winter route. And we're GLAD we did.
From the car, we took a logging road (appears as a double dashed line on Caltopo) which took us by a camp and then on to a snomo trail. Followed the snomo trail a short distance before heading E on an old logging road. Left logging road at 2100' and headed a bit S of E, ending up on Whitcomb's SW ridge at approx 2750'. Then turned NE to summit. From about 2400' to a point close to the summit, we had to contend with waves of hobble bush, and thick spruce that could be impenetrable in deep snow.
We agreed to try an alternate route down. From the summit, we simply followed the drainage W down the mountain, almost entirely in open woods, easily skirting cliff bands and avoiding sprucy areas. At 2400' we dropped into wide open hardwoods. We met our ascent route at 2000'
Grades - mostly moderate, some steep
Once back to the car, we decided to eat lunch at the edge of Nash Stream. We were pleasantly surprised to find the remains of a cribwork dam. |
