so many trees bent over into the trail from just south of North Twin all the way down to Zealand Hut. Trees are heavy with snow and ice
It was a real workout breaking trail from North Twin to Zealand and battling the bent over trees full of ice and snow. We bare-booted to the water crossing and then put on microspikes until the summit of North Twin. Unbroken from there so we put on snowshoes and they stayed on until Zealand Hut. There were only 2 of us breaking trail so that section still needs some more help. 1-2 feet of snow with some deeper drifts. Got to the Guyot junction and no tracks toward the Bonds so we made the right call. We hoped that Zealand summit down to the hut would be broken out and thank goodness it was - still lots of trees blocking the trail. About 19 miles total and 11.5 hours car to car. Definitely speaks to the conditions out there. |
