| Comments: |
Several pairs of snowshoes had been over the trails in the days before our hike and they left it in great condition. The packed powder base is not fully consolidated but is firm enough to allow light traction with only minimal slippage. Two in our group wore snowshoes, while the author went with micro-spikes. The snowshoes went on at around 2,500 feet and stayed on until returning to the same elevation. The packed powder base is 1-2 inches at the road and increases with altitude to around 12 inches on the ridge. Fresh powder (1-2") had fallen overnight and continued to fall sporadically throughout the day.
All higher peaks were in the clouds and there were no long distance views. But the trees at higher altitude were still wearing a thick blanket of snow from recent storms, making for a beautiful and peaceful walk in the woods. |
