Comments
Comments: I wore spikes the whole trek. Could have barebooted to the falls, but liked the security on the occasional ice. Packed snow all the way up trail towards Chorcorua; was glad for traction on icy spots, and especially on Piper Trail up on the rocky summit. Light snow, 20-40mph winds above treeline. I was solo and saw no one else until the final mile back to car (4 people headed to falls). Trail was obscured in many spots on rocky final approach -- took it slow to avoid a fall and to assure myself I was on the trail. Saw 3 blazes on vertical rock faces -- any blazes on horizontal rocks were covered with ice and snow. Very doable, but first-timers on the peak should make sure they are comfortable on that last pitch and absolutely have spikes. (If headed to Middle Sister, snowshoes are recommended as it is broken out but trail is not yet packed.) This could all change with the next snow, so I would have both snowshoes and spikes (the usual winter gear).
