Peaks Mt. Starr King, Mt. Waumbek, NH
Trails
Trails: Starr King Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, December 9, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking in the uphill lot today. I managed to get my low clearance car up the hill very slowly and carefully, there are quite a few ruts.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Few step overs at low elevations (at start)
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Wow, quite a few blowdowns, as noted in previous reports. About 10 up to Starr King, including a tree dangling above the trail that hikers have to scoot around. Some have been cleared by hikers, but there are still around 8-10 up to SK; another 8-10 between the peaks. Maybe I should carry a saw.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: None today. Great hike for dogs, but a little too much for my older boy. Nice gradual hill. Water locations are under snow/frozen, so bring some for your pup.

Comments
Comments: Great day on the trail today. Most of the trail is packed with a nice snowshoe trench, we'll see what happens with the upcoming rain. Several in spikes, one in smaller trail runner snowshoes, and a couple even bare booting; everything worked. I was going to use snowshoes, but with the large number of blowdowns I opted to stick with spikes; one person intentionally used smaller snowshoes to maneuver around obstacles. Congrats on Angela on gridding Waumbek. Nice chatting with Joyce and Bob from Maine on the way down.
