|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Dicey's in good shape up to the Rollins junction; Above that on the way to Pass summit, there were several small step overs easily negotiated, one new blowdown that has fallen lengthwise into the trail, and a couple of large leaners on the steep, ledgey section toward the top that could be an issue when snow amounts increase. Rollins had too many to count frozen leaners / blowdowns that required crawling under and through. |

The good news is that the trails are broken out, but the bad news is that it was snowing again pretty heavily by the time we left so this report may be old news before I even finish typing it! Since we were unsure about the condition of the ledges on the Blueberry Ledge Trail up WF, we opted for an out and back route to both summits via Dicey's and Rollins - going to Pass first and then out and back to WF on the Rollins trail. We were able to bareboot the lower part of Dicey's in the AM up to the water crossing - trail was a little crusty and choppy in places, but overall in good shape. Above the water crossing, the trail surface got much softer with more loose snow, so we put our snowshoes on here and kept them on for the rest of the day...and they were definitely the way to go! Rollins trail needed to be rebroken from the Dicey's junction over to WF summit. It looked like it had been travelled some over the weekend as there was a trench visible here and there, but there was some new snow and lots of drifting filling in the path, and in many places no trench / path visible at all. Snow was very soft all along here and will need more traffic to consolidate it. There were many frozen trees leaning over and into the trail as seems to be happening everywhere in the whites right now. We tried to free up as many as we could, but there were still lots of leaners / crawlthroughs / and crawlunders. It was a slow snowy trek, but always a good day in the woods! |
