Many blowdowns and bent over, iced-in tree tops. Cleared several on Carter-Moriah trail, but more to be done. Easy to get confused in the jumble of trees about 1/4 mile south of North Carter Trail junction. |

Kind of icy from the start. One tricky spot (narrow, icy, right next to brook) at about 0.7 miles - you'll probably want spikes there. I put them on for water crossing at 2.5 miles. On the ridge I switched to small snowshoes to minimize post-holing. A lot of ice chunks in trail made snowshoes frustrating, but some loose powdery snow on the ridge. Switched back to spikes shortly after getting on Imp Trail. Lots of trees in the way on the ridge. Probably gets better each day as hikers chip away at the worst ones. Bushwhacked from the hard right turn (from SW to NW) on the Imp Trail back to parking lot - less than a mile with one water crossing. |
