This south-facing trail is one of the first mountain trails in the Lakes Region to melt out. The lower portion of the trail has patch snow/ice. The middle portion has some monorail in the sunny areas (adjacent bare ground is sometimes frozen, sometimes not) and fuller spring snow cover elsewhere. The upper portion still has full snowpack, with some ice in places.
I was able to bareboot without much issue this afternoon (temperatures in the 40s), but rock Microspikes would probably be needed in a few hours when temperatures drop. Trail is currently too boney for much of the way for snowshoes (though I'd probably bring them if doing the upper Eagle Cliff Trail).
If the upper end of the snowfall estimates hit, snowshoes would not be out of the question for the upper 2/3rds to upper half of the trail tomorrow. If the lower end, the snowshoes would probably be superfluous on this trail at this time. |
