| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I parked outside the gate for the Gap Mtn. (North) trailhead. The parking lot was open a few weeks ago but is now gated for winter. Room for a few smartly parked vehicles outside the gate without blocking it. |

Bald Rock on Mt. Monadnock.
In brief: This mountain needs either more snow for snowshoes or more icy stuff for spikes.
This area got a little new snow from last night's storm but not much. Lower elevations had a crusty dusting and higher up had about 2-3 inches. While the new snow was soft it was also sticky. I donned microspikes heading up and down the steep Old Halfway House paths but they kept balling up. I left them on until I got to Amphitheatre Trail where I couldn't take it anymore. :) Otherwise I barebooted. Forget snowshoes until the next big storm; coverage is too thin and you'll wreck them. Still lots of exposed rock and ledge. I didn't summit so I can't speak to the conditions on top.
I'd never hiked in from Gap before and it's definitely the quiet approach. I only passed one other person all day. |
