Skipped the lower Stinson Mountain Trail because it looked bony. The lower snowmobile trail had some postholes, but there was recent snowmobile traffic after the first junction, making for much smoother sailing. Snowshoes were the way to go.
I took the upper portion of the hiking trail, which hadn't seen much use. Though bony in the rocky areas, snowshoes were ideal, as there was about 4" of powder on top of a frozen base. There was evidence of a pretty nasty fall taken by a Microspiker on an icy patch that was easily crossed with snowshoes on powder. More traffic needed to pack things out.
Snowmobile trail was smooth sailing for the descent.
Where as there were only a few inches of snow at the base, snowpack quickly increased to a foot. Snowmobile is not yet being groomed (a few waterbars haven't filled in), but it looks like it'd be fine for skiing (saw one skier out).
Balmy 6 degree start late this morning, warming to 8 degrees by lunch time. Not too bad though with blue skies and minimal wind. Stinson Lake iced over. |
