Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All were rock hoppable for me. The larger ones on the southern end of the Tripyramid loop (there are 3) took some upstream/downstream bushwhacking and extra care. Definitely might put some folks out of their comfort zone.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Lots of blowdown up high. Carried a folding saw today and cleared a few small ones. Based on the amount of blowdown I am seeing on all my hikes recently, I’m going to continue this practice. Clearly there was a big windstorm in the fall.

Comments
Comments: Prime snowshoe conditions. My Hillsounds went for a ride. Most of this loop is 6-8” of fluff on a very firm base. Did the loop CCW, followed one other set of tracks most of the way. Went to crampons on the slide, which were better than snowshoes, despite the occasional posthole. Still a lot of exposed or nearly exposed rock here at times, snowshoes were awkward. I switched back to them in the trees that split the slide and regretted it. Looked like the tracks I was following butt slid down. That must have been fun! Huge drifts and blowdown on south Tri made the trail hard to follow. Had to check map, bushwhack, make my own path in the right general direction a few times. But that’s part of the adventure of taking the “less traveled” route. Scaur had another set of tracks or two and was just gorgeous in the afternoon sun on the descent. I’ve done the Tri’s via Pine Bend in winter conditions too and I must say I prefer this route despite some extra mileage. Looked like a few people had gone up the North Slide recently. Saw no one the whole day until the cross country skiers appeared on Livermore road. I’m guessing that was because of the temperatures, which were single digits at the start and single digits below up top, but almost no wind as this route was leeward. Always have to consider that with the temps where they were today. I thought it was a beautiful day! Of note: sign on the shed at the Livermore lot says wear snowshoes on the groomed CC ski trails. I did of course and had one skier thank me for doing so.
