Road to Christine Lake-Old Summer Club Road is 0.4 mile, narrow and steep but plowed. Spur to Christine Lake was not plowed but had been traveled. With AWD I was able to drive in and park in the designated area without issue. |

This was a winter trail bagging, not peak bagging, endeavor. 3-4” fresh snow down low, 6-8” higher up. The snowshoeing was sublime this gorgeous Christmas Day, and I had a great workout.
Started off with Old Summer Club Trail, visiting the lovely Devil’s Rest Shelter (last sign in October 24), en route toward the Percies. The trail was easy to follow, with ample blazing and Cohos Trail signs. The ledge section and scrambly moves were fun, but I took great care here. Turned around at the South Percy spur junction and headed back to Victor Head.
Victor Head Side Trail is evidently a moose party spot, with lots of bedding impressions, hair, and moose pellets littering the trail. Both outlooks had awesome views today (such deep blue skies!), one towards the impressive little Percies, the other south and east, encompassing the Mahoosucs, Northern Presidentials, and Pilot Range. (Be careful to not fall off the ledge here!)
Next up was Rowell Link. This trail is about half old logging road, half winding woods trail, where closer attention is required in order to stay on the trail. Lots of critter tracks here.
Final trail was the unsigned “Christine Lake connecting path.” Think I saw where this is also referred to as “Lamphere Trail” by the SPNHF but not 100% sure on that, and there was no signage. Was a wider old woods road that passes a camp and a cool standing chimney on a bluff.
Contemplated trudging back up the connecting path and grabbing Bald Mountain Notch Trail, then road walking back to Christine Lake, but my legs had had enough trail breaking so opted to save it for another day. |
