Water Crossing Notes: Crossing one (trailhead) is open as usual but hoppable. Crossings 2 and 3 are snow and ice bridged (the latter is fairly firm, but there is still an opening...I'd heed caution when temperatures rise.

Comments
Comments: About a foot of snow down low and about 3 feet up high.

Fairly smooth highway up to the ridge and the Sosman summit spur, but a few places are unconsolidated after blowdown removal/blocking off the herd paths around the blowdowns. A brief slushy area in the usual place above crossing three, but otherwise not too bony. Decent snowshoeing conditions, but we'll see what happens as the temperatures warm and the masquerading Microspikers inevitably posthole the heck out of everything before the subsequent deep freeze.

The Mt. Tecumseh Trail side of the summit loop (if you go left at the crooked sign, you're no longer on the Mt. Tecumseh Trail) has seen very little use. One single set of snowshoe tracks and a jungle gym of blowdowns. I removed the worst of it, but there are a few stepovers that remain, some of which may remain until the snow melts in the spring. Snow is quite deep on this side. A barebooter postholed their way up behind me, taking about 5 steps at a time, as they were consistently up over their knees. Someone should invent a form of flotation that attaches to the feet/shoes for winter hiking. Perhaps they could call such an invention a snowshoe.

Beautiful blue sky day. Temperatures were in the single digits in the I-93 corridor early this morning, but it seemed like there was a bit of an inversion. Temperatures warmed into the 20s in Waterville, but were above freezing in the sun, softening the previously packed snow.
