Comments
Comments: Started Jewell from the ammo lot and was surprised to see that no one had tracked it out prior to today. Broke it out with snowshoes with relative ease. The lower mile or so is somewhat bony but it fills in nicely as you gain elevation. You could start to feel the effects of the strong inversion layer today just before the treeline. Strong sunshine and no wind, what more could you ask for in December. From treeline to the junction with Gulfside, there are some deep snow drifts that swallowed up my snowshoes a few times. Gulfside is a combination of small snow fields and bony spots with bare rocks. It was on of those times where the snow was too soft to barefoot but too rocky for snowshoes to be effective. I kept my snowshoes on only because I hate carrying them on my back, but there were some bare booters doing just fine here. On the decent back down Jewell, several more hikers had laid out a nice snowshoe trench, although it is not yet hardened up. Below treeline snowshoes are the better choice, but above it could go either way.
