Falling Waters was hard packed snow. I used MicroSpikes on the way up, which was plenty. There was one icy section, but it was a series of ice shelves that were easy to step up with just the spikes. Along the ridge there was a fair bit of ice covered by a very thin layer of snow. I kept the spikes on that was fine.
Expecting perhaps more difficult conditions on the descent from Lafayette, I put on crampons, but I wouldn't say they're a necessity. The spikes would have been fine, as long as you take your time on that one steep section just after you start coming off Lafayette. Still, it's much faster in the crampons.
Old Bridal was also well packed, but with maybe an inch of softer snow churned up by so much foot traffic. Absolutely no need for snowshoes at any point along the hike today. |
