Comments
Comments: Ammo trail starts out unconsolidated and powdery. Used spikes for a while, but switched to snowshoes as it became progressively steeper. LThe trail hardens up considerably at the tree line. The section from Lakes of Cloud Hut (buried under a giant snowbank) up to Mt. Monroe is crunchy and icy. Spikes or Snowshoes would work well. The trail south to Mt. Eisenhower is similar - bony, icy and rocky with occasional deep snowdrifts. The drifts get progressively deeper at the base of Eisenhower. It's a tricky hike up to the summmit: steep, icy rocks frosted with a few inches of powdery snow. The Crawford path to the cutoff back to 302 is a sidewalk. Easiest part of the hike ... by far. Thursday's weather was simply amazing. If you're up for winter hiking you'll definitely want to go now!
