Beautiful sunny day in the Presi range with relatively high temps and low wind for this time of year. Took Jewell trail up to gulfside from Ammo lot to start the morning, passed a few groups some wearing snowshoes and some wearing spikes. Trail was bony for at least the 1st half but I chose to wear snowshoes because the snow was not very consolidated. Just above tree line, I switched to hillsounds because postholes in the snow made the snowshoes a bit awkward. Kept hillsounds on the rest of the day. Went out to Jefferson on gulfside, the trail was a mix of loose snow, packed trail, postholes and bare rocks. Took gulfside back over to where it meets the cog and took that up Washington, again there were areas of packed snow and loose snow, I would have recommended snowshoes for this section but hillsounds were still fine. Saw lots of hikers and skiers on this section. Took the cog down from the summit, stayed close to the tracks for Jacob’s ladder section and found it pretty safe. Snow was mostly soft going down the cog, not super packed at this time. Easy decent back to Ammo parking lot |
