Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lincoln Woods parking area has been plowed, but watch out for ice because it has not been plowed well. There were 5 cars when I arrived at 6:45am, about 2/3 full when I left at about 1:30
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Several of the smaller streams have snow bridges. Of the two major crossings on FBT between LWT and LBT, one of them had a snow bridge, but it was very narrow and may not last much longer given melting today and this weekend with above freezing temperatures and rain. The other crossing was much more difficult, but there is a log about 100ft downstream of the trail that provides an okay crossing. DO NOT try the snow bridges at the second river crossing, the ice is thinner than it looks and all of them collapsed when we tested them with our poles.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Many blowdowns on FBT. No other issues.
Dog-Related Notes

Comments
Comments: My goal was to circumnavigate Owl's Head on skis, but that completely failed. I made it to 1/3 mile beyond the south junction of LBT on FBT. LWT is in great shape, it was nice and easy to ski with a good packed base layer. Beyond that, I had to break FBT, which had about 8in of unpacked powder, but as the day warmed, it became quite sticky and hard to ski on. I would not recommend skis for FBT, snowshoes are definitely the way to go. It is narrow in several locations, and with the river crossings, fallen logs, and short but steep undulations, it is a challenge to say the least! Other than that no other problems to report. This hike took me to 971.9 miles in the mountains, and I look forward to reaching my first 1,000 miles next year. Happy New Year!
