| Water Crossing Notes: |
We were the first people in a while to try the Little River crossing. There are ice bridges the whole way, but still some pretty large open holes. It looks a little sketchy, but is actually quite stable and easily held two adult men. Wearing snowshoes for the crossing helped. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
After the autumn storms, there are many, many blowdowns particularly between South Twin and Guyot shelter. Most can be walked around. |

It was a long day for a Twins - Bonds traverse for a December grid for two of us. Temperatures were great, but trail conditions not so much. Someone had gone all the way in to the Little River crossing and turned around there. After the crossing (see notes above) we broke trail to the summit of North Bond. The snow was 6-8 inches deep with not much of a stable base underneath.
Someone had come up to North Twin from Galehead, so the North Twin Spur was broken out and is now well packed down. After South Twin, it was back to breaking trail. It was tough work between South Twin and Guyot, with knee deep snow in places and lots of blowdowns. Getting off trail to keep navigating around blowdowns definitely gets tiring.
At the time, the Twinway out to Zealand was not broken out, but there were two groups who were behind us who broke it out. Once we got to Guyot, someone had come in from Bondcliff, so we at least had partially broken trail the rest of the day.
Several groups of us made the trek out to West Bond, so that is in pretty good condition. The steep final slope up to the summit is pretty easy to manage, even in snowshoes.
The rest of the way out is in ok shape, but is not very well packed. After hitting Bond and heading down towards Bondcliff, the snow got very sticky towards the end of the day, so there were lots of stops to knock it off our snowshoes.
The final long stretch out to Lincoln Woods is well packed. Just put your head down and grind it out. |
