Crappy shoulder season conditions this morning. The Whiteface Mountain Trail could be barebooted with care. Areas of melting black and blue ice, as well as long stretches of wet trail.
Piper-Whiteface Link was rough. Some slushy areas down low and up high. Multiple ledgy areas had wall to wall blue ice, with bare trail in between. Rock spikes worked this morning because the ice was soft, but if the ice is still there when temperatures drop, Microspikes could be insufficient. Please don't walk off the trail to avoid the ice or slush; this causes "trail creep" which accelerates erosion and other trail issues.
Snowpack ranges from 0 to 2 inches down low, but there are pockets that are more than half a foot deep up high. Not enough snow to consider using snowshoes at this point.
Had I known conditions would be like this, I would have gone elsewhere. Probably better to put this on the shelf until either we have significant melting (possible over the next few days) or more snow.
Cloudy morning with some glimpses of blue sky and a nice partial undercast. Temperatures were apparently in the mid-30s, but it seemed warmer higher up. |
