Trails
Trails: Nineteen Mile Brook, Wildcat Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, December 29, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking at Nineteen Mile Brook Trailhead today - likely because of the rain.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Big crossings have installed log bridges. The one non-bridged crossing is quite small and I don't think it will be trouble even with the coming rain.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are still significant blowdowns on the trail up to Wildcat Ridge, particularly above about 4000 feet. There is a stretch of 1-200 feet where the trail is rerouted onto a herd path to avoid several consecutive blowdowns. Also a few more minor blowdowns closer to Wildcat A on the ridge.

Comments
Comments: Warm temperatures meant a very mushy day even up on the ridge. There was minimal snow/ice so I barebooted Nineteen Mile Brook up to the turnoff for the Wildcats, then put on snowshoes for the ascent. You definitely want snowshoes for the ascent and the ridge! The snow is very very soft and I was sinking in even with snowshoes. There are still several large blowdowns that require routing off the trail especially toward the top of the trail up to the ridge. The ridge itself is in better shape with some blowdowns closer to Wildcat A but they're more navigable. The trail was in decent shape when I went up but unfortunately there were a couple of folks in spikes who came up just before I headed back down and they really tore up the trail with postholes. Things are especially bad on the herd paths around the blowdowns.
