Hiking goals met weather. The trail was actively draining snowmelt in open areas on ski trail & we noted flow increased on way down. Above outlook, there was potential for 4’ postholes if boots got off the packed track. Expect uneven trail & icy refreeze conditions until significantly more snow arrives & gets packed. I used crampons & felt good about decision, but snow/ice in warm temps was soft enough for sharp microspikes. Believe trail too uneven for snowshoes now [Um...4 feet of snowpack just referenced?!?]. Some experienced lighter people w/small snowshoes could manage, but it maybe frustrating. Bit of exposed rocks & cascades throughout, but trail still almost all snow covered. Short trail to cafe had a few avoidable blowdowns. |
