Did some red lining today and avoided the usual Old Bridal Path highway. Ishmeal and I spotted a car at the Skookumchuck Trailhead and headed back to the Cannon Tram parking. Finding Greenleaf trailhead is a little tough, although there is a sign after you cross under Route 93. we had Kahtoola microspikes/Hillsounds on and never changed through out the day. The Greenleaf Trail is beautiful once you get up to Eagle Pass, very interesting through there and the Route 93 traffic noise ends at that point.
At the Greenleaf Hut we met up with Silverfox and Valerie and visitied a bit. Mark was in Grivel crampons and Val was in the new Hillsound crampons lite. I was impressed by those. I am frustrated by the Kahtoola and Hillsound microspikes because they rotate around my feet at all the wrong times.
After the Greenleaf Hut we passed through the trees and layered up near the (3rd) treeline. The temps never dropped below 20 degrees F hence we were both rather warm as we climbed the last 600 feet to the summit of Lafayette. There was an long, steep, icy, No Fall Zone about .2 miles from the summit, the Hillsounds were fine, but Ishmael felt he was at the edge of the Kahtoola's capabilities.
At the summit of Lafayette we took some pictures with Mark and Val and headed of to Mt. Lincoln The entire ridge was essentially windless. I have never been up on that ridge in such calm conditions. The downside was that the visibility was often as short as 200'. We took some more pictures with Mark and Val at the summit of Lincoln, did a 180 and headed back to Lafayette. We encountered a few that were attempting this hike without traction aids. IMHO not a good idea. They were moving very slowly, I hope they made it safely.
After the summit of Lafayette we headed North on the Garfield Rige Trail to the Skookumchuck Junction. The visibility was lousy and picking out the cairns was difficult at times, but we found the junction just fine, and headed down on the Skookumchuck Trail. |
