Based on previous reports and lack of recent snow, decided to leave snowshoes in car, hill sounds door to door...maybe 1/4" of new snow at TH. 2 miles in where it starts getting steep, there was 1" of new snow, and while I wasn't breaking through, the layer under the new snow was not giving traction to the micros...like walking up a steep sand dune. There was one other hiker ahead of me who switched to snowshoes after the first steep section and she had much better traction ("wish I'd switched much sooner" was her take). Some drifting between the peaks, where the drifting snow on the trail ranged from 0" to 1'. Other than a few places, wasn't sinking in, but snowshoes would have been nice for the traction. Going down with the spikes on the steeper sections was mostly "falling with style" as the spikes weren't getting much bite...a combo of surfing, skating, skiing minus the surfboard, skates, or skis...it was actually kind of fun with some butt touches on the steeper parts. The hiker with the 'shoes marched straight down the steep sections with good traction. 3 hikers total on the trail today. The last guy headed up in the afternoon had snowshoes and had just broken a microspike so the trail is probably in pretty good shape.
Hopefully today's warmer temps will allow the snow to set up a little. |
