Parked at the camp Dodge parking lot at 7 AM. The gate was open and we were able to get up the road with four-wheel-drive. Decided to go clockwise today. Trail is very bony until junction. After the junction the Snowpack got much better and snow shoes were key. When we got to the ridge, the snow was extremely deep and unconsolidated so without snow shoes, we would have been toast. The ridge is navigable, but it is a blowdown and leaner apocalypse. Ran into Molly Friedman, and Company and graciously allowed them to break trail ahead of us. They were heading to the Wildcats. Continued over middle and south Carter and then from zeta pass Went out and back to Carter Dome. The trail was in much better shape than we expected. It had a nice firm base, but there was still several blow downs that we had to hop over or go under. Heading down the trail got quite bony and we probably should’ve switched to micro spikes but we use snowshoes door-to-door. If you’re heading to the carters make sure to have snow shoes for the ridge and spikes for the ascent in decent. |
