BALLS it was a nice day to be outside. January 12... check! (350/366) Laid out fresh tracks along all trails aside from our descent on Hi-C. Spikes to the switchback of Lonesome Lake, then snowshoes from here to the car. Why wait when you can televate. Lonesome lake is an absolute drag strip. Above the lake it was tracked out but snowshoes where the way to be. Monsterous drifts - they where above Chris' head in a few spots on Kinsman Ridge Trail towards NE. Of note for skiers, snow was visually cracking in large sections with each step above 3500. That may impact high angle play. Quadzilla WELL fed on powder drifts and busting the 0.25 to NE Cannonball (Winter #94/100 for me). After that it was mostly tracked out with us leaving fresh tracks. Of note, from Coppermine Col to Hi-Cannon Junction on KRT is very much ASCENT only at this time with ice. The last pitch about 0.2 from junction is not for everyone for sure. Tubbs snowshoes sufficient but this is a no fall area at the moment. We opted to largely parallel the trail for about 100yds upslope for safety. Winds singing as usual on the tower. Also par for the course was the early birds getting no views on summit and but brilliant sunshine on the way out. Passed about 8, all in microspikes on our descent on Hi-C. It's seemingly packed enough that its a comfort thing. I'll always be in my magic shoes. |
