Two cars were parked by the plowed area leading towards summer lot, one seemed to have been sprayed with snow from a plow; I used the main lot, parking in the area near the start of the route. |

Turned out to be a fine day on Cannon, the skies were partly sunny on the way up with decent if somewhat cloudy views; some menacing gray clouds and precip seen down along I-93 to the south never really moved over the mountain. Only saw one other hiker, though there were three other cars in the lot at start and finish. Took the Short and Rim trails around just for variety. Tram closed, no refreshments available.
Trail has packed snow with a bit of fresh powder on top, maybe 1" lower and 1-2" up higher. Only saw a bit of drifts in the exposed section above the col - covering the trail in places, and route finding took a bit of looking and thinking but wasn't too difficult. Started bareboot but put on microspikes within 1/4 mile of the start; changed to snowshoes in the col at 3800' just as you come out of the low trees into the scrub section; left 'shoes on til pavement at the end. Windy on the viewing platform, otherwise only a bit of wind at times, and a few flakes falling on way down. My calves are sore - what a steep route. |
