Comments
Comments: Solo hike up to Firescrew via Mowglis Trail. Started with bare boots in about 1" new powder atop a vehicle-packed base up past the old tractor/ side road to the off grid house. Beyond that, I was able to easily walk bare boot in firm jeep tracks all the way up to the col. Some ice under the snow here and there. Did not notice the Camp Mowglis wolf marker at the State boundary--perhaps it is now gone, but enroute I did run into several fancy new snowmobile trail system signs with trail names that some hikers might find confusing and mistake for hiking trails. Mowglis from the col to just below the first open ledges was a mess of awkward post holes with 2" powder atop; I used snowshoes to level off the mess. From below the first ledge on, the trail was entirely drifted in and deep in places; broke trail from there to the top. Firm sastrugi beginning to form on some of the ledges. Others were windswept. Trail from Firescrew to main summit looked well hammered out. Also broke out Hanging Rocks Path & walked down to the bog/beaver swamp on Orange Cove Trail & back. On the way out ran into the interesting fellow who lives off grid on lower Mowglis/Orange Rd and chatted for a good 20 minutes. He mentioned that he's transported lost hikers back to Cardigan Lodge many times over the years.
