Comments
Comments: trail packed by hikers before us, some snowshoeing (thank you all!) we carried snowshoes and crampons. snowshoes were only felt needed on from Shining Rock outlook to Little Haystack, micro spikes were better on the ridge where there were rocks not covered by snow. no potholes seen. the steep section not far down from the hut was seen with bare rocks, icy and prone to slip, two of us butt-slided down slowly and well, one was unable to control speed and almost slipped into a possibly much worse situation, ice ax or rope or crampons would be better tools for it (after thought). weather and trail conditions were perfect. scenes : layers of undercasts, fleeting overcasts, dark green Kinsmans and Owl’s Head, white capped Presidential Range shining, a gray jay watching over us on tip of a rock, snow flakes growing on rocks like mushrooms reminding of the freezing winds blowing from the west.
