Comments
Comments: I wasn’t expecting that we would make it to a summit, with the windchill. There were only two other cars at the trailhead, when we got there in the late morning. One was a group of two snowshoers and a pup, who were descending as we set out. The other was a single person in spikes, who arrived back to her car when we finished.
We snowshoed from door to door. The Doublehead Ski Trail has a really nice, wide packed trail that people are both skinning and snowshoeing. There is a separate XC ski track and then clear ski trails through the rest of the powder. It’s bony in a lot of places; it looks like the overnight snow was maybe 2-3”.
Old Path had some drifted over bare boot tracks and was also bony. At the Old Path / New Path junction there was a bare boot tracks that went left toward North. There were no recent tracks toward South. We headed up New Path toward South! The winds changed from gusting to sustained at more than 35mph (because they were pushing me around) when we were maybe 200 yards below the view. Though my pup gave me an uninterrupted diatribe about this reality, I really wanted to peek out at George. So we did. The ledge is not flat so we didn’t venture out too far.
We fairly quickly headed back down to the junction, because that windchill was no joke. Though I really wanted to continue over North, I was cold and my pup was giving me side eye about the wind, so we headed back down Old Path. I am super happy that we got a little bit of a view on this super cold day!
You could conceptually do this in spikes right now but the snow is grippy so snowshoes were really efficient, both ascending and descending. [and it is a ski trail, so skis or snowshoes should be used on that!]
