Comments
Comments: Main objective was Willey, which I orphaned for W48 a couple years ago, but it was so nice(although chilly at times) and we felt pretty good so did all the peaks. Put on snowshoes at 2750'. Saw 10 people all day, 3 in snowshoes, 7 in spikes. Only saw a couple of postholes through entire hike. Snowshoes seemed like the better traction option though. We went up Avalon first, contrary to most peoples loop direction being unsure on how much we'd get done. Large portions are buttslid, but traction was still fine with snowshoes. A little tricky getting up the chimney to Avalon with some blue ice, but it's a safe fall in the snow if you slip, which Motha Rush'ya did on the way down. The weather changed wildly throughout the day. The views were dramatic with snowsquals visible throughout the whites. We got caught in one and briefly considered retreating in the col between Field and Willey. The trail here isn't obvious and the wind and snow were completely erasing the track and almost whiteout conditions. We continued thinking we could bail down the ladders worse case. We were very glad we continued when 20 minutes later the sun came back out. Overall it was a fine day in the woods. The snow is very beautiful at elevation right now and the trails are very firm.
