The two of us were first on trail today. Broke trail from the car to the summit. Snow depths varied greatly throughout. On the road walk there was 3-5 inches with occasional drifting. Once o the trail much of the snow had been caught in the trees or blown away so much of the trail only had a dusting to 2 inches with a shallow base underneath. After the first mile or so snow becomes somewhat more consistent with 3-5 being the norm with occasional drifting in some spots. Drifting and deeper snow depth became much more persistent starting at 2,700 ft and going to the top. A well defined trench is still noticeable through most of the trail until about 4,000 ft when much of it is filled in with drifting being calf to just below knee depth. After crossing the exposed section of signal ridge snow depth is 8-12 inches from the trees to the tower. With high winds and snow falling intermittently most of our tracks had already been completely filled in when we started descending. Ran into 4 others, all in snowshoes and their tracks that were only 10-20 mins old had been filled in once we passed. If going out tomorrow expect to run into trail breaking as nothing seemed to stay broken out for more than 15-30 mins with wind filling it back in completely. |
