Comments: Snowshoes door to door for our two-person team, starting on the soft snowmobile trails following someone's wandering snowshoe tracks. We then turned off to break trail up Garfield Trail to the summit, in about a foot or so of shin-deep powder to start, and eventually knee-deep with drifts along the switchbacks heading to the junction with Garfield Ridge. We’d seen reports of two people doing a Pemi loop a week ago, but with all the fresh snow in the past week, their presence on Garfield Ridge was hardly discernable. For context, the 2mi stretch between Garfield Trail and Gale River Trail took 3.5hr to break out in multiple feet of powder, including crawling through constant heavy-laden blowdowns. To our surprise nobody had broken out Gale River Trail by the time we finally reached it mid-afternoon, but thankfully the base was more supportive than anything else we’d done that day, so we made much quicker work back down to the car.

It’s deep out there, and this was before the next round of snow overnight Sat into Sun. But if you want the pleasure of doing Garfield Ridge in the winter, at least the base will now be firmer…!
