Very little wind today, and blue skies all morning. I wore snowshoes up OBP, the snow was wind packed so kind of awkward sidehilling in spots, only occasionally punching through. Switched to rock spikes on Greenleaf at treeline. My snowshoes went back on after Haystack, where the real adventure began. The blowdowns weren’t as numerous as I expected, but the hidden spruce traps were plentiful. The woods on this 1.6 mile section are fairly open and wind blown and not traveled much, so there was no way to take advantage of any previous person’s steps. Sometimes I’d be staying right on top, then waist deep in a hollow spot. It’s a real struggle extracting yourself out after a few times. Reaching that packed trail to Liberty and Flume was such a relief, even with the crowds. I debated taking Flume Slide down to avoid people but I couldn’t see tracks going that way from the summit, just 10 foot high drifts and bare rock. When I passed the lower end off Liberty Springs I saw there was a track but maybe they turned around? From the Basin I took the Pemi Trail which was broken out and I helped pack it down a bit more. There were a lot of snowmobiles out so it was nice to have the river between us for the last 2 miles. It took me 10 hours total for this loop. |
