Comments
Comments: Beautiful winter day, going up Mt Willey from the south. Some very steep sections in the half-mile below the peak. I used Lightening Ascent snowshoes, and needed every bit of their aggressive tracftion. My hiking companion used crampons. We thought ice axees would be overkill so left them in the car... I would have been happier with an ice axe for a few pitches. Met a pair of hikers who did it all in microspikes, so I gueess it's possible, but it's definitely not what I would do. Almost all the ladders are completely buried, one ladder just to the right of a giant boulder was still a bit exposed, and long and steep. We climbed it front-pointing in the snow between rungs on the way up, on the way down we saw there was a bypass route through the trees to the west, would probably have been easier for the climb up too.
