Comments
Comments: Hedgehog is a lot of work right now after recent snowfall. I expected to be breaking trail but there were some barebooters out ahead of me going up the west side and they made areas of shin and knee deep postholes to maneuver over (we were the only 3 people on the trail since it snowed). Despite the challenge of the chewed up trail, I made it to the top in good time. The views at the top and on the ledges were fantastic and there was no wind to deal with. I went down the untracked east side and ran into areas of deep snow, breaking through down to my knees and mid waist at times on some uphill pitches. There were parts on the flat section where you could actually stay on top of the crust, and then sink shin deep a few steps later. It was a slog and I don't think I made it too much better as a solo snowshoer. At the very least, the trail is obvious now! An out and back on the west side won't be too bad, but the east side trail is going to be a lot of work until a brigade of snowshoers gets to it. The total trip took an hour longer than anticipated due to snow depth.
