Date of Hike: Saturday, February 22, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail lot filled up with today having such ideal conditions. Parking overflowed to the shoulder of Route 16, but all cars appeared to be able to get out of the travelled way for northbound traffic.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Ice bridges are solid, stable, and covered with snow.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There is a large tree fallen across the Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail maybe 3/4-miles from the trailhead; snowshoe trench has routed around it. The Carter-Moriah Trail between Zeta Pass and the summit of Carter could use a lot of trimming of branches jutting out into the hiker's path.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I bet winter-hardened doggos would love these peaks!

Comments
Comments: What a day! Conditions were pretty much ideal, and without a cloud in the sky the views of the Presidential Range from near the summit of Carter Dome were superb. Hiking partner and I started up the Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail and had plans to climb Carter Dome via Carter Notch first, but intel from fellow hikers caused us to change our plans to climbing up to Zeta Pass and summiting Carter Dome that way. Hikers met at the summit of Carter Dome report that we made the correct choice - the route to Carter Dome from the notch is broken, but just barely. The route we took all the way from NH Route 16 to Zeta Pass was very well-graded, stomped-down, and enjoyable; the push from Zeta Pass to the summit of Carter Dome was steeper and more grown-in, but eventually we got to the top. Headed back down to Zeta Pass, had a snack, and started the push to South Carter Mountain. This trail, too, was well-traveled and never overly-steep. Once we made the summit of South Carter, we decided it was a little too late in the day to push for Middle Carter. Another time. Turned around, headed back to Zeta Pass, down the Carter Dome Trail to the Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail and back out to the car. 11-1/2 miles altogether, not too shabby. #24 and #25 for the White Mountain 4000-footers in wintertime for me.
