Comments
Comments: Bluebird day with very little wind. The 2 mile road walk was tedious but bearable thanks to the packed tracks left by the snowmobilers. Signal Ridge trail was mostly a packed-powder sidewalk. I suspect it settled and firmed up overnight so it should be in even better shape on Sunday. While I was tempted to spike it, snowshoes were the best choice. Step off the sidewalk even a few inches and you'll sink in up to your knee. The sidewalk shrinks to the width of a single snowshoe in a number of places along the steeper sections. The ridge is fully packed powder that squeaks under your feets as you traverse. For the last short stretch up to the summit the trail is less consolidated. Needless to say, the magnificent views of the Presidentials (NE) and Franconia Ridge (NW) made the trip worth the effort. If you want to grab Carrigain now is the time!
