After some initial hope that the flats would be bare-bootable, I put on my shoes within the first 20 feet of the trail. Others ahead of me did not, and the trail was a mess of post-holes and churn as a result. Luckily I caught up to the culprits (4 guys in their 20s) around Bunnel Notch, and the trail ahead of them was a beautiful trench, with 1 set of shoe prints ahead of me. I cruised from this point until I crossed paths with the same group again around the view point on my descent. They refused to believe they were damaging the trail and thought I could easily step around their post-holes and that all the snow would melt within a month [facepalm].
There were two other snowshoers out today, helping to mitigate the damage this group caused, but given the damage they did ascending in the morning, the damage will be severe after they descend this afternoon. With the coming thaw/freeze, this trail could remain pretty nasty until the next big storm unless it sees a bunch of snowshoe traffic before the freeze.
