I was expecting a slush fest after the rain/wintry mix yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to find great snow shoeing conditions. There was a coating of fresh snow and icy crust down low. The few snowshoers ahead of me broke trail and I followed trying to consolidate and smooth it out. In the higher elevations, the snow was more powdery and deeper, harder to consolidate. However, with 5 snowshoers on trail in total, we did a great job of paving the way. Towards the peak, there was a bit of snow balling up on the snow shoes, but briefly lasted. Unfortunately, as I headed down from the peak, a barebooter headed up leaving several deep post holes. I tried to fill some in, but knew more would be made behind me. I know earlier in the week, the trail was in great shape for spikes and bare booting, but with the warming sun today, the trail softened. Now with the cooling temps coming, the post holes may freeze. Overall, it was a beautiful hike on a sunny day! |
