Trails: Mt. Cube Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, February 28, 2025
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking at the trailhead on 25A -- a couple inches of soft snow in the lot, but nothing a passenger car with FWD can't handle.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder, Deep Snow - Unpacked Powder, Deep Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Nothing of note -- all crossings frozen, but the largest, over Brackett Brook, had a large open area just a few feet from the snowshoe track -- might be interesting in a few days with the warm-up and forecast rain.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few blowdowns on the final 0.4 miles, a couple will require a chainsaw -- none were too much of an issue, but some could be annoying to get around because of the deep, unconsolidated snow. We did de-limb one that required some limbo-ing. If you head up in the next few days, take a small saw with you and prune a few more...

Comments
Comments: Beautiful day up on Cube; saw just one other person, and had the sunny summit to ourselves.

Cross-Rivendell and Kodak trails looked like they hadn't seen any traffic for a few days, at least.

[We chose this route over the CRT primarily for some solitude and, we'd read on recent social media that the condition of the CRT was a bit rough/chopped/postholed.]

Snowshoes are a must. A few inches of new snow down low is reasonably packed, but as the trail climbs, is less consolidated. No one had been on the trail for several days, and the one person who had appeared to have turned around just over a mile in and perfectly re-traced their snowshoe steps so that the track was a frozen mogul.

On the ascent at about 2000 feet, right before the trail makes a sharp turn left (south), we began to lose any previous tracks under a foot or so of new snow -- stepping off this resulted in serious postholing, with snowshoes. This continued all the way until just before the summit. On the way down, we were able to smooth stuff out a bit. A misstep, though, and you might be up to your crotch in snow.

Snow softened a bit down low later in the afternoon in the direct sunlight -- this trail has quite a bit of that at this time of year.

Forecast higher temps on March 1 will make this post obsolete pretty quickly.
